Never have to walk alone

In your life, you may feel like no one understands you or has experienced what you have. Group counselling presents the opportunity to meet other individuals in the same boat as you, letting you be validated and encouraged by stories like your own.

2

Gain fresh insights

Often, we are harsh on ourselves and cannot be objective with our own circumstances. Gain fresh insights on your own recovery journey as you look at those who mirror your own experiences, and learn to offer support to others and yourself.

Receive professional help

What differentiates group psychotherapy from other self-led support groups is the presence of a certified therapist. Rest easy knowing you are in safe hands, led by our therapist to help you gain the most of our group sessions held at our cosy centre in Upper Thomson.

What happens during group therapy?

A trained psychotherapist will facilitate therapy simultaneously with a group of people. Usually, this group of people will share a common struggle, such as depression, alcoholism, or anxiety. At our counselling centre in Singapore, our group therapy is capped at 5-6 persons to allow for more intimate sharing. On the first session, the therapist will initiate some icebreaker activities to allow the group to know each other better. Subsequently, therapy sessions may include a mix of talking, answering questions, and other activities such as trust-building or psychological exercises.

What conditions can be treated with group therapy?

Group therapy has been used as part of intervention programmes for people with depression, addiction (e.g. alcoholism, drugs), anxiety, eating disorders, and obsessive compulsive disorder. Our group counselling sessions, held in Upper Thomson, can also be used to support people facing similar life issues, like people dealing with grief, trauma, or life-threatening diseases.

Is group therapy better than individual therapy?

Group therapy and individual therapy both have their advantages. Group psychotherapy is great for those who want to feel less alone in dealing with a particular condition, but individual therapy is still most effective for diving into deep, personal issues with a certified therapist. Group therapy allows one the opportunity to learn from others’ experiences, comparing it to their own experience to see what has worked for them and what they could try next. The practice of listening and responding to another person’s problems also helps one develop more objective and rationale ways of thinking which could be applied to one’s own situation.

Who is group therapy suitable for?

Group therapy is suitable for those who wish to meet others who are going through similar issues as them, and gain support and validation from these group interactions. Group therapy may not be suitable for individuals who are very reserved, or who simply prefer keeping their condition and the details of it absolutely private. Those who are actively suicidal, aggressive or abusive would also not be recommended for group therapy.

"Some of the most comforting words in the universe are 'me too.' That moment when you find out that your struggle is also someone else's struggle, that you're not alone, and that others have been down the same road."
